Outdoor Adventures at the Ranch

This has been a busy week for kids at the Ranch. Kids on every campus had the chance to get outside and experience nature.

Courtney*, a teenager on the Minot campus, has always wanted to see wild horses. Last weekend, Amber Benham, Horse Program Coordinator at the Ranch, took Courtney and two other residents to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. They explored the rugged beauty of the Badlands and yes, they saw wild horses. Courtney completed her treatment and moved on from the Ranch a few days later but she will forever have the memories of this day.

Kids on the Bismarck campus learned about native plants and animals of North Dakota as they hiked the trails around the North Dakota Game and Fish Department Headquarters. They also caught and released some fish from the pond.

Kids in Fargo benefited from the overwhelming generosity of Wake the World, a nonprofit volunteer network of boat owners who provide boating activities for children at-risk. They, and children from other worthy programs in the area, boated, swam, tubed, and wakeboarded. One of the girls said swimming in a lake was, "kind of scary." Another said of her first experience tubing, "...it was amazing!"

We strive to provide our kids with summer experiences they can treasure forever. For many, they are brand new experiences. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to provide our kids with memories that will last a lifetime. And thank you for supporting the work we do. Ranch kids are so worth it!

*We take the confidentiality and privacy of our children very seriously. Courtney is a Ranch resident—we share her name only with her permission and a signed consent form from her guardian.
