What kinds of groups are offered through Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch?
There are therapist led dialectic behavioral therapy groups, spiritual life groups, social skills groups, recreation groups, shining through groups (Minot campus), chemical dependency groups, as well as other groups that take place on various campuses.
How often will my child meet with a therapist in your programs?
Residents meet with a therapist typically for one hour a week individually and other times as needed. This can vary based on the psychosocial and developmental needs of each individual child. Residents also take part in therapist led groups which take place on average for two hours a week.
What type of kids do you work with?
The types of kids we work with are very diverse with a large spectrum of target behaviors ranging from conduct disorder, autism spectrum disorders, borderline personality disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, chemical dependency, sexual offenders, and developmentally disabled just to scratch the surface. The population served also depends on the cottage. If you have questions about whether or not Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch can serve your child, please get in touch with our admissions coordinators.
Can I get in contact with a therapist if I have a question?
Absolutely! We welcome questions of any kind from parents, family members, and referrals.
What areas are therapists trained in?
Therapists throughout our programs specialize in a number of areas. Areas include: therapists trained to work with children with developmental disabilities, licensed addiction counselors, therapists trained to work with children with sexual offenses, therapists trained in cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectic behavioral therapy, EMDR, motivational interviewing, and other areas of expertise.
We have tried to get our child to participate in therapy in the past and it has been unsuccessful. How can this be different?
Children are exposed to individualized treatment 24 hours a day. If your child has typically not responded to therapy services, therapists work to come up with therapeutic interventions that can be used with your child daily. In addition, therapists are on-site and have a wonderful opportunity to form solid relationships with the residents which may also help in building the therapeutic relationship.
How long is the treatment program?
Treatment length is individualized and will factor in the needs of the child. There is no set length of time for treatment. The average length of stay is between 9 and 12 months and can be longer or shorter depending on the needs of the child.
Where do the residents attend school?
Depending on the level of treatment, there are many different options for school. All of our cottages have a school on-site of campus, and residents are also given the opportunity to work their way up to going to school out in the community. Again, these services are individualized and based on the need of the child as well as the cottage they are placed in.
Can I visit my child while they are in placement at Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch?
Yes! We welcome and encourage family involvement. Passes and on-site visits are determined on an individualized basis. Family therapy is also a provided service based on the needs of the family.
